SECTION 1
Agent: Good morning, Coastal Adventures. How can I help?
Catherine: Hello, I'd like to book the island day trip for next weekend.
Agent: Certainly. Can I take your name?
Catherine: It's Catherine Wilding.
Agent: Could you spell the surname, please?
Catherine: Yes, it's W-I-L-D-I-N-G.
Agent: Thank you. The tour you're interested in is the Isle of Skye tour, and it leaves every Saturday at 8:30.
Catherine: And how much does it cost?
Agent: The standard price is £45, but if you book online it's £40.50.
Catherine: Oh, and are children half price?
Agent: Children under twelve are, yes — £20. And actually, if you're booking for next weekend, there's a special offer, so it's £38 for adults.
Catherine: Right, I'll book online then. One more thing — what about lunch?
Agent: Lunch is included, so you don't need to bring anything except a waterproof jacket. It can be very windy on the island.
Catherine: Good to know. And what time does the coach get back?
Agent: It returns around 6 p.m. — though last week it was a bit later because of traffic.
Catherine: That's fine. Oh, and I've just remembered — the date. Is it the 15th?
Agent: The Saturday tour is on the 16th, actually. The 15th is a Friday.
Catherine: Of course, the 16th. Thanks.
SECTION 2
Good afternoon, and welcome to the City Museum's new exhibition, From Clocks to Computers. Before we begin, a few practical notes. The exhibition is open until 5:30 today, and the gift shop closes at 5, so do your shopping before you leave the galleries.
Now, the tour. We'll start in the main hall with the early timekeeping section — you'll see sundials and water clocks there. Some of you may have read that the mechanical clock was invented by the Italians, but actually the earliest escapement mechanism we have evidence for comes from China. From there we move to the eighteenth-century workshop, where the great clockmakers worked.
Now, a quick note on the audio guides: they're available at the information desk, and they cost £3 — the printed guide, however, is completely free.
When you reach the computer gallery, please don't touch the displays — they're originals, and the museum's insurance doesn't cover damage. The café is on the ground floor, and it offers a 10 percent discount to ticket holders. Right, if you're ready, we'll begin.
SECTION 3
Dr Evans: Right, let's talk about your group project on pollinator decline. Laura, how's the data collection going?
Laura: We've done most of the field surveys, but we're finding the bee counts are hard to standardise.
Tom: Yeah — and I'm not sure the methodology we copied from the 2019 study is still appropriate.
Dr Evans: That's a fair point, Tom, though I'd push back a little: standardising counts is always tricky, but it's more about consistency than precision.
Laura: Actually, I thought the real problem was the weather. The wet spring meant we had fewer survey days.
Dr Evans: Which is why you should be looking at the monthly average, not the daily data.
Tom: But then we lose the detail about which species visit which flower.
Dr Evans: You can present both. The average gives the big picture; the species data can go in the appendix.
Laura: So we don't need to choose?
Dr Evans: No — and that's the point of a mixed-methods approach.
Tom: Okay. And on the literature review, should we include the recent study that found urban gardens can support pollinators?
Dr Evans: Absolutely — it directly challenges the assumption that urban areas are ecological deserts.
Laura: But it's based on a very small sample.
Dr Evans: True, but it's a starting point for discussion. Right, who's presenting the introduction next week — Tom?
Tom: I was hoping Laura would.
Laura: No, Tom — you said you'd do it.
Dr Evans: Let's decide now, because it needs to be finalised today.
Laura: I can do the methodology section instead.
Dr Evans: Fine — Tom, introduction; Laura, methodology. Agreed?
Tom: Agreed.
SECTION 4
Today I want to talk about urban beekeeping — the practice of keeping honeybee colonies in cities. It's often assumed that urban beekeeping is a recent trend, a product of the sustainability movement, but in fact the practice dates back at least a century.
The first recorded urban apiaries in Europe appear in Paris in the 1850s, though it wasn't the French who pioneered rooftop hives — that was the Egyptians, who kept hives on the roofs of their houses in the Nile valley thousands of years earlier.
One common misconception is that city bees produce less honey than their rural counterparts. In fact, urban hives can be more productive, because cities offer a more diverse range of flowering plants across the season, whereas intensive farmland provides a short, uniform bloom.
However, there are genuine problems. The biggest threat isn't pesticides, as many assume, but the spread of disease between hives, because hives in cities are packed closer together.
As for the honey itself — studies have shown that despite worries about pollution, heavy metal levels in urban honey are well within safe limits.
