The Silk Road
Long before the internet connected continents, there was the Silk Road — a network of trade routes that linked China, India, Persia, Arabia and Europe for over 1,500 years. The name suggests a single road, but it was not: it was a web of tracks, deserts and mountain passes along which goods, ideas and diseases travelled between civilisations.
The trade itself was ancient. Chinese silk, prized in Rome for its lightness and shimmer, travelled westward; in return, horses, spices and glass moved east. But the more profound exchange was not material. Along the same routes, Buddhism spread from India to China, and Arabic numerals travelled from the Middle East to Europe, where they replaced the clunky Roman system. Paper-making, invented in China, reached Europe only after the techniques were captured in a battle in 751.
The Silk Road also carried less welcome cargo. The Black Death, which killed a third of Europe's population in the fourteenth century, almost certainly travelled the same routes that had previously carried spices and silk. The lesson — that connections bring both prosperity and risk — was not lost on later empires.
By the sixteenth century, the Silk Road had declined. Ocean-going ships, faster and safer than camel caravans, shifted trade to the sea. The great cities of Central Asia — Samarkand, Bukhara — shrank into provincial towns. Yet the memory of the Silk Road never died. In recent years, China has revived the idea under the name "Belt and Road", investing billions in railways and ports across Eurasia. Whether history will repeat itself — with both benefits and risks — remains to be seen.
