正文 Passage

A. What was the Renaissance?

The Renaissance, meaning "rebirth" in French, was a period of extraordinary cultural and intellectual change that began in Italy around 1350 and spread across Europe over the next three centuries. It marked the transition from the medieval world — dominated by religion, tradition and authority — to a modern mindset that valued individual experience, observation and reason.

B. The Italian city-states

The Renaissance began in the city-states of northern Italy — Florence, Venice, Genoa — not by accident. These cities were rich from trade with the East, and their wealthy merchants, particularly the Medici family of Florence, became patrons of artists and scholars. Unlike medieval kings, who commissioned art to glorify God, these merchants wanted art that celebrated human achievement. This shift in patronage shaped everything that followed.

C. Rediscovery of antiquity

At the heart of the Renaissance was a new fascination with the classical world — the art, literature and philosophy of ancient Greece and Rome. Medieval scholars had known these texts, but they read them through a religious lens. Renaissance thinkers, by contrast, studied them for their own sake, admiring the beauty of the language and the courage of the ideas. This movement, known as humanism, placed human beings — not God — at the centre of inquiry.

D. Art as science

Renaissance artists were not simply painters; they were scientists and engineers. Leonardo da Vinci, whose notebooks fill thousands of pages, studied anatomy by dissecting corpses, calculated the mathematics of perspective, and designed flying machines that would not be built for centuries. The art of this period — from Michelangelo's ceiling of the Sistine Chapel to Botticelli's Birth of Venus — looks more realistic than anything produced in the Middle Ages because it was based on careful observation of the natural world.

E. The printing press

If Italy supplied the ideas, Germany supplied the technology. Johannes Gutenberg's invention of movable type around 1440 made books cheap enough for ordinary people to own. Ideas that had previously circulated only in manuscript, read by a handful of monks and nobles, now spread across continents in weeks. The Reformation, the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment were all, in a sense, consequences of the printing press — and the Renaissance was its starting point.

F. Legacy

The Renaissance did not suddenly replace the medieval world; it grew out of it. But it was the moment when Europeans began to look at themselves and their world with fresh eyes, asking questions that had not been asked for a thousand years. That curiosity — about nature, about the human body, about the distant past — remains the defining spirit of Western science and art today.
