The Gig Economy
A growing number of workers no longer hold a single "job for life". Instead, they move from one short-term task — or "gig" — to the next: delivering food, driving for a ride-share app, designing websites on contract, or tutoring online. This flexible way of working, known as the gig economy, has grown rapidly over the past decade, and it is reshaping what people expect from employment.
For workers, the appeal is obvious. The gig economy offers freedom: you choose your hours, decline tasks you don't want, and work from wherever you like. For parents, students and retirees, this flexibility can make work possible at all. For employers, too, the model is attractive: they can hire labour precisely when they need it, without the cost of permanent contracts, office space or benefits.
Yet this freedom comes at a price. Gig workers are classified as self-employed, which means they are not entitled to sick pay, holiday leave, or the minimum wage. In many countries, they also receive no pension contributions, no insurance against injury, and little job security. When illness strikes or demand falls, they have no safety net. As one driver put it, "I'm my own boss — and my own creditor, my own accountant, and my own unemployment service."
The debate is now shifting from whether the gig economy should exist to how it should be regulated. Several European countries have ruled that ride-share drivers should be treated as employees, entitled to basic protections. Others are experimenting with a middle ground: portable benefits that follow workers from one gig to the next.
The bigger question is what kind of labour market society wants. Complete flexibility may suit some, but a workforce with no security, no training and no long-term loyalty is unlikely to produce the skilled, stable employees that a sophisticated economy needs. The gig economy is here to stay, but it should not be the only model on offer.
