Good morning. Today we're tracing the history of Mars exploration, from early flybys to the latest rovers.
The first successful mission to Mars was Mariner 4, which flew past the planet in 1965 and returned the first close-up photographs. Those images showed a barren, cratered landscape 鈥?not the canals and cities some had imagined.
In 1997, the Pathfinder mission delivered Sojourner, the first rover to roam the Martian surface. It was tiny 鈥?about the size of a microwave 鈥?but it proved that robotic exploration was possible.
Then came Spirit and Opportunity in 2004, and Curiosity in 2012, which landed in Gale Crater and has been exploring the mountain at its centre ever since.
Over the decades, evidence has mounted that Mars once had liquid water on its surface 鈥?river valleys, lake beds, and mineral deposits that form only in water.
Looking ahead, NASA and other space agencies aim to send humans to Mars in the 2030s. Whether that goal is met on schedule remains to be seen.
