Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to look at how sleep and memory are connected — specifically, what researchers call memory consolidation.
You've probably experienced this yourself: you study for an exam, you sleep on it, and the next morning you find you remember more than you did the night before. This isn't just a feeling. During deep sleep — that's the slow-wave sleep we get mostly in the first half of the night — the brain replays the neural patterns created by the previous day's learning. It's almost as if the brain is practising while you're asleep.
Now, where does this replay happen? Initially, new memories are stored in the hippocampus, which is relatively small.
