SECTION 1

Accommodation Officer: Good afternoon, University Housing. How can I help? Marco: Hi, I'm an international student. I'd like to enquire about summer accommodation. Officer: Certainly. Your full name? Marco: Marco Rossi. R-O-S-S-I. Officer: And what type of accommodation are you looking for? Marco: Well, I was thinking of a shared flat, actually. Wait — no, actually, I've changed my mind. I'd prefer a single room. Shared flats get too noisy when I'm studying for exams. Officer: A single room. And what's your budget? Marco: Around £120 a week? Officer: I'm afraid single rooms start at £145. The shared flat would be £120. Marco: £145 is fine then. Officer: Weekly rent is £145. The deposit is £400 — that's four weeks' rent. Marco: When can I move in? Officer: The 1st of August is the earliest. Wait, let me check... Actually, we have a cancellation on the 25th of July. That works? Marco: The 25th is perfect.

SECTION 2

Sarah: Welcome to Riverside Library. I'm Sarah, the volunteer coordinator. Sam: Thanks, Sarah. It's great to be here. Sarah: The building is on the riverside, right by the old bridge. Many people think it's near the university, but it's actually a ten-minute walk from the campus. Sam: Got it. Sarah: The ground floor has reception and the café. The first floor is fiction, second floor is non-fiction. Third floor is the silent reading room — absolutely no talking there. Sam: What about children's books? Sarah: Children's section is in the basement, not on the third floor. And media centre — DVDs, music — is on the first floor next to fiction. Sam: The café — is it open all day? Sarah: It opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m. We'd love it to be 24 hours, but security won't allow it. It serves light snacks and coffee, but no hot food. Sam: What should volunteers wear? Sarah: No uniform — just comfortable shoes. We'll give you an ID badge on your first day. Sam: Closing times? Sarah: Weekdays 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays until 6. Sundays we open at 11 and close at 4 p.m.

SECTION 3

Dr Patel: Right, James, Priya — let's talk about your remote work study. James, you presented your initial findings last week. What was your hypothesis again? James: My hypothesis was that remote workers are less productive because the home environment is full of distractions — beds, television, family members. Priya: But that's exactly what I disagree with. My data shows the opposite — remote workers actually report higher productivity because they're not interrupted by colleagues stopping by their desks every ten minutes. Dr Patel: Interesting. So you're saying distractions at home are less severe than office interruptions? Priya: Exactly. In my sample of 200 workers, 68% said they got more done at home. James: But your sample was from a single tech company. Mine was across multiple industries. Priya: That's a fair point. My sample might be biased — tech workers tend to be self-disciplined. Dr Patel: So what's the conclusion? Both of you have partial evidence but different populations. James: Maybe we should combine our datasets? Priya: That makes sense. We could control for industry type. Dr Patel: Good idea. James, can you redesign the survey next week to include Priya's questions about office interruptions? Then we'll run a combined analysis. James: Sure. But what about the interviews we planned? Dr Patel: Put those on hold for now. Fix the survey first.

SECTION 4

Good morning. Today we're examining the role of sleep in memory consolidation — a process that researchers now understand to be far more complex than previously assumed.

During deep, slow-wave sleep, the brain replays patterns of neural activity that were originally encoded during waking hours. This replay, which occurs primarily in the hippocampus, gradually transfers recently acquired memories to the neocortex, where they become integrated into long-term storage. Crucially, this transfer is not passive; it involves a selective filtering mechanism that prioritises emotionally salient or behaviourally relevant information.

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, which occurs in cycles throughout the night but predominates in the early morning hours, serves a distinct but complementary function. While deep sleep strengthens factual and declarative memories — names, dates, formulas — REM sleep appears to be particularly important for procedural memory and creative problem-solving. Studies have shown that individuals who sleep after learning a complex motor task show significantly better performance on subsequent tests than those who stay awake.

Sleep deprivation, by contrast, impairs both the encoding and the consolidation of new information. The prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive function and attention, is particularly vulnerable to sleep loss, explaining why fatigued students struggle to concentrate during lectures. Research consistently demonstrates that at least seven hours of sleep before a learning session optimises both attention span and subsequent memory retention.
