SECTION 1

Gym Staff: Good morning, City Gym. How can I help? David: Hi, I'd like to sign up for a student membership. Gym Staff: Sure. Your name? David: David Chen. That's C-H-E-N. Gym Staff: Great. We have two options: standard membership is 35 pounds a month, and student membership is 25 pounds a month. David: And what does that include? Gym Staff: Full gym access, all group classes, and the 25-metre swimming pool. The sauna is extra, 5 pounds a month. David: I'll take the student membership. Gym Staff: Normally there's a 40-pound joining fee, but this week it's waived. You just need to fill out this form and show your student ID. David: Perfect. When can I start? Gym Staff: Immediately.

SECTION 2

Welcome to the campus bookstore. I'm Rachel, the store manager. On the ground floor you'll find general fiction, stationery and the cafe. Textbooks are on the first floor 鈥?take the lift at the back. The clearance section is in the basement.

At closing time, your main job is to straighten the shelves. The senior staff count the cash, so don't worry about that. But do make sure the side exit is locked before you leave.

Staff discount is 15% off all books, and 20% off stationery. If a textbook is out of stock, we can usually order it within 48 hours, but please tell customers it might take up to a week to arrive.

Finally, all new staff must attend a one-hour health and safety training on the 20th of September.

SECTION 3

Dr Morrison: Right, Anna, Ben 鈥?let's look at your lab reports. Anna, your results look almost too clean. Did you repeat the experiment? Anna: We ran it three times, but two runs were very similar. Dr Morrison: That's the problem. You need at least five repeats. If two of three are nearly identical, something systematic was wrong. Ben: My data shows a similar trend, but there's more variation between runs. Dr Morrison: That's more realistic. Anna, repeat the experiment with freshly calibrated equipment. Anna: Should I rewrite the conclusion too? Dr Morrison: Get the data right first. The deadline is next Thursday 鈥?not Friday, I need them earlier.

SECTION 4

In 1973, Austrian ethologist Karl von Frisch won a Nobel Prize for decoding the dance language of honeybees.

When a forager bee finds nectar, she returns to the hive and performs a waggle dance on the vertical honeycomb. The dance is a figure-eight pattern with a central straight run.

The direction of the waggle run encodes the direction of the food source relative to the sun. Straight upward means the food is in the direction of the sun. The duration of the waggle run indicates distance: one second equals roughly one kilometre. Bees communicate sources up to 10 kilometres away.

Recent research shows bees also release olfactory signals that smell like the flower they visited, reinforcing the dance message.
