SECTION 1

Clerk: Good morning. How can I help? Alex: I'd like to open a student account. Clerk: Your name? Alex: Alex Turner. Clerk: Date of birth? Alex: June 15, 1999. Clerk: Overdraft limit is £1,000 standard. Wait — for students in the engineering department, it's £1,500. Are you in engineering? Alex: Yes, mechanical engineering. Clerk: Then your overdraft is £1,500. No monthly fee. Alex: That's great. Clerk: But you need a confirmation letter from the university. Not a tuition receipt — an enrolment letter. Alex: I can bring that tomorrow.

SECTION 2

Sarah: Welcome to the museum. Our most famous exhibit is the Egyptian mummy on the ground floor. The dinosaur skeleton is popular, but it's not our most famous piece. Volunteer: Where should I stand when giving talks? Sarah: At the gallery entrance. Don't stand next to the exhibit — it blocks the view. Volunteer: Opening hours? Sarah: 10 to 5 Tuesday to Thursday. Fridays we stay open until 7. Volunteer: What do I wear? Sarah: No uniform. Comfortable shoes — you'll be on your feet. No need for formal clothes. Volunteer: When's training? Sarah: The 12th of October.

SECTION 3

Dr Green: Hannah, your topic — social media and body image. It's interesting, but it's very broad. Hannah: How can I narrow it? Dr Green: Focus on one platform or one age group. Sam, what about your topic? Sam: I want to study sleep and academic performance. Hannah: That topic has been done to death. Every psychology student writes about sleep. Sam: But most studies look at self-reported sleep. I want to use actual sleep tracker data. Hannah: That's harder. Where will you get that data? Sam: I can use existing published datasets. Dr Green: Good thinking, Sam. Don't collect from your classmates — too small. Hannah: I'll focus on TikTok and teenage girls. Dr Green: Better. And the deadline? End of this week — not next Monday.

SECTION 4

Good afternoon. Today we're exploring bioluminescence — the production of visible light by living organisms — a phenomenon that has evolved independently at least forty times across different branches of the tree of life.

In the deep sea, where sunlight penetrates no deeper than about one thousand metres, more than seventy-five percent of organisms are capable of generating light. The biochemical mechanism typically involves a molecule called luciferin, which, when oxidised by the enzyme luciferase, releases energy in the form of photons. The vast majority of deep-sea organisms emit light in the blue-green spectrum, because these wavelengths attenuate most slowly in seawater.

Perhaps the most celebrated example is the deep-sea anglerfish, which possesses a modified dorsal spine that functions as a luminous lure. Inhabiting waters below two thousand metres, the anglerfish dangles this bioluminescent bait in front of its enormous jaws, attracting curious prey within striking distance. Other organisms, including several species of squid, employ a different strategy: when threatened, they eject clouds of bioluminescent mucus, temporarily blinding or confusing predators.

Beyond their ecological significance, these chemical systems now inspire biomedical research. Researchers are engineering luciferase genes as fluorescent markers for tracking cellular processes, applications that range from cancer imaging to drug development.
