Restaurant: Bella Italia. How can I help? James: Hi, I'd like to book a table for Saturday evening. Host: Certainly. Your name? James: James Parker. P-A-R-K-E-R. Host: How many people? James: Six 鈥?it's my girlfriend's birthday. Host: Saturday the 18th? What time? James: Is 7:30 possible? Host: Let me check... yes, we have a table at 7:30. Would you prefer indoor or outdoor? James: Indoor, please. And could we get a table near the window? We'd like a nice view. Host: I'll note that down. We can't guarantee it, but we'll do our best. James: Thanks.
SECTION 2
Welcome to the community centre. I'm Maria, the manager. We're on Main Street, right next to the park 鈥?you can't miss the blue door.
On the ground floor you'll find the gym and the reception. The dance studio is on the second floor, and the computer room is in the basement.
We run a variety of classes. The yoga class is on Tuesdays and Thursdays 鈥?it costs 拢5 per session and is currently running. We have about ten spaces left. The Monday art class is fully booked, but you can join the waiting list.
New members must attend a 30-minute orientation session 鈥?it covers safety, equipment, and our booking system. There's no joining fee, just the annual membership of 拢20.
We're open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, but closed Wednesday afternoons for cleaning.
SECTION 3
Dr Carter: Lisa, David 鈥?let's go through your literature reviews. Lisa, yours is well-organised and covers a good range of studies, but it lacks a clear argument. You're summarising what others have said without taking a position. Lisa: I see. Dr Carter: David, your structure is good, but the critical analysis is weak. You need to point out contradictions and gaps in the research. David: I'll work on that. Dr Carter: One more thing for both of you: add more recent studies 鈥?the last five years. Most of your references are pre-2020. Lisa: Should we remove older ones? Dr Carter: No, keep the foundational work, but balance it with current research. David: When's our next tutorial? Dr Carter: Let's say Thursday at 2 p.m. 鈥?not Friday, I have a meeting then.
SECTION 4
Good morning. Today we're looking at the so-called "Mozart effect" 鈥?one of the most famous and most misunderstood findings in popular psychology.
In 1993, researchers at the University of California reported that college students who listened to ten minutes of Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D major performed better on spatial reasoning tasks 鈥?specifically, paper-folding and cutting tests. The effect lasted about 15 minutes.
The media went wild. Headlines declared that listening to Mozart made you smarter. Record companies sold millions of "Mozart for Babies" CDs, and even the state of Georgia gave free classical music CDs to every newborn.
But subsequent research painted a more nuanced picture. Follow-up studies found that any enjoyable, arousing music produced a similar temporary boost 鈥?the key factor was increased mood and arousal, not Mozart specifically.
Today, researchers agree that while music may enhance certain spatial-temporal tasks in the short term, there is no evidence that it raises overall intelligence. The Mozart effect, it turns out, was less about Mozart and more about feeling good.
