Good afternoon. Today we're looking at the critical role of bees in global food security.
Roughly 75 percent of global food crops benefit from animal pollination, and bees are the most important pollinators. Honeybees alone contribute an estimated 235 billion dollars to the global economy each year.
But bee populations are in decline. Colony collapse disorder 鈥?where worker bees suddenly abandon their hives 鈥?was first reported in the United States in the early 2000s. Since then, beekeepers have reported losing 30 to 40 percent of their hives each winter.
The main threats are well documented: habitat loss as natural meadows are converted to farmland, neonicotinoid pesticides that impair bees' navigation, and the Varroa mite, a parasite that spreads viruses.
There are practical solutions. Farmers can plant wildflower field margins around crops, reduce pesticide use, and leave areas of undisturbed land. These measures benefit not just bees but entire ecosystems.
