Good afternoon. Today we're looking at Roman aqueducts 鈥?one of the greatest engineering achievements of the ancient world.
Rome's first aqueduct, the Aqua Appia, was built in 312 BCE. Over the next 700 years, the Romans built 11 aqueducts supplying the city.
The engineering principle was simple but brilliant: gravity. Aqueducts were built on a gentle, consistent gradient, using arches, tunnels, and siphons to maintain the slope. Water flowed downhill from mountain springs to the city, sometimes over distances of 90 kilometres.
At its peak, the city of Rome received about one billion litres of water per day 鈥?more than many modern cities. The water was distributed through a network of lead and ceramic pipes to public fountains, public baths, and the homes of the wealthy.
One of the best-preserved aqueducts is the Pont du Gard in southern France. Built around 19 BCE, it stands 49 metres high and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
