Good morning. Today we're addressing one of the most glaring contradictions of the modern food system: food waste.
Globally, roughly one third of all food produced 鈥?about 1.3 billion tonnes 鈥?is wasted. That's enough to feed two billion people.
The pattern differs sharply between rich and poor nations. In developed countries, most waste occurs at the consumer and retail level 鈥?supermarkets throw away food that doesn't look perfect, and consumers bin leftovers. In developing countries, the loss happens earlier, during harvesting, transport, and storage, where infrastructure is inadequate.
When food ends up in landfill, it decomposes anaerobically and releases methane 鈥?a greenhouse gas roughly 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
The United Nations has set a target: by 2030, reduce global food waste per capita by 50 percent. Achieving it will require changes at every level 鈥?from farm to fork.
