Good afternoon. Today we're looking at one of the most visible consequences of climate change: coral reef bleaching.
Corals are animals, not plants. They live in a symbiotic relationship with tiny algae called zooxanthellae, which live inside the coral tissue and provide them with food through photosynthesis.
When ocean temperatures rise 鈥?even by just one degree above the seasonal average 鈥?corals become stressed. They expel the colourful algae, revealing their white skeleton underneath 鈥?hence the term "bleaching."
Bleached corals are not dead, but they are weakened. If the warmth persists, they die.
Severe, widespread bleaching events were rare before 1980. They became common in the 1990s and 2000s. The Great Barrier Reef has experienced mass bleaching in 2016, 2017, and again in 2020.
There are local measures 鈥?reducing pollution, overfishing 鈥?but the single most important action is cutting carbon dioxide emissions to slow global warming.
