SECTION 1

Gym: Peak Fitness. How can I help? Alex: Hi, I'd like to join the gym. Receptionist: Certainly. Your name? Alex: Alex Chen. C-H-E-N. Receptionist: What type of membership? We have basic, premium and off-peak. Alex: I'll take the basic one... wait, actually, the premium. I want access to the swimming pool too. Receptionist: Premium it is. Joining fee is £50... actually, this month we're waiving the joining fee. Alex: Great! Receptionist: Monthly fee is £35 for premium. Alex: That's fine. Receptionist: You also get one free personal training session every two weeks. Alex: Every two weeks? I thought it was every week. Receptionist: Premium members get one every two weeks. Weekly sessions are for platinum.

SECTION 2

Lisa: Welcome to the campus bookstore. I'm Lisa, the manager. New Staff: Thanks, Lisa. Lisa: The textbook section is on the first floor, not the ground floor. Ground floor is stationery and gifts. Basement is used books. New Staff: Students get a discount, right? Lisa: Yes, 10%. Some people ask about 15% — that's for staff, not students. New Staff: Is there a café? Lisa: Yes, in the corner near the window. It sells coffee and pastries, but no hot food. It closes at 4 p.m., not 5. New Staff: What's my first task? Lisa: Before anything else, you need to read the staff handbook. The cash register training comes after that. New Staff: Opening hours? Lisa: Weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays 10 to 4.

SECTION 3

Dr Morgan: Sarah, Tom — let's look at Tom's experiment. Tom, you were testing whether background noise affects concentration. Tom: Right. My hypothesis was that loud noise reduces test performance. Sarah: But your results show the opposite — the loud noise group actually scored slightly higher. Tom: That's because my sample was only 15 people. If I'd had more participants, the trend might have been clearer. Sarah: Or maybe there was no real effect to begin with. You didn't have a silent control group — everyone heard some noise. Tom: That's not fair. I did have a low-noise condition. Sarah: Yes, but you called it "silent" when it was actually 40 decibels. That's not silent. Dr Morgan: Both of you make fair points. Tom, your sample is small and your control condition is weak. Rather than redoing everything, I suggest you add a limitations section explaining these issues. Tom: So I don't have to collect more data? Dr Morgan: Not for this report. But for your next study, fix both issues. Sarah: When is it due? Dr Morgan: This Friday. Don't wait until the last minute.

SECTION 4

Good afternoon. Today we're examining one of the most remarkable communication systems in the animal kingdom — the dance language of honeybees, first systematically described by Karl von Frisch in the early 1940s.

When a forager bee returns to the hive after discovering a food source, she performs a series of movements on the vertical surface of the honeycomb. The round dance, a simple circular motion, indicates that food is located within approximately fifty metres of the hive. For more distant sources, the bee switches to the waggle dance — a figure-eight pattern in which the middle segment, the straight run, is the information-bearing component.

The waggle dance encodes two critical pieces of information simultaneously. The duration of the waggle phase is proportional to the distance to the food source: the longer the waggling, the further the food. The angle of the waggle run, measured relative to vertical on the comb, communicates direction relative to the sun.

However, more recent research has revealed that the dance is not the bees' only communication channel. It now appears that foragers also transfer scent traces from flowers visited, and that experienced foragers learn to interpret these olfactory cues alongside the dance. This multimodal communication system is far more sophisticated than von Frisch originally imagined.
