Good morning. Today we're examining how children acquire language — a process so rapid and universal that linguists have long suspected an innate biological basis.

In the 1950s, Noam Chomsky proposed that all humans are born with what he termed a universal grammar — an innate cognitive framework that constrains the possible structures a human language can take. This, he argued, explains why children produce sentences they have never heard before, despite being exposed to limited and often imperfect input.

Experimental evidence shows that newborn infants can discriminate between every phoneme in every human language. However, this perceptual flexibility declines rapidly: by approximately twelve months of age, infants lose the ability to distinguish phonemic contrasts not present in their native language.

Researchers have identified a critical period for language acquisition, roughly from birth to puberty — around thirteen years old. Beyond this window, while language learning remains possible, it becomes far more effortful and rarely reaches native-like fluency. Between the ages of two and eight, children acquire vocabulary at a rate of approximately ten new words per day. Finally, social interaction is essential for developing pragmatic grammar — the ability to use language appropriately across different social contexts.
