In the deep sea, where sunlight never reaches, bioluminescence is not rare 鈥?it's the norm. More than 75 percent of deep-sea creatures can produce light. The process involves a molecule called luciferin, which reacts with oxygen to emit light. Most deep-sea organisms glow in the blue-green spectrum, because that wavelength travels farthest in water.
Perhaps the most famous example is the anglerfish, which has a glowing lure dangling above its head to attract prey in total darkness. Other creatures, like certain squid, release glowing clouds of mucus when threatened 鈥?a biological version of a smoke screen.
Scientists are now studying bioluminescence to develop new fluorescent markers for medical research. The same chemicals that let a deep-sea fish glow can help doctors see cancer cells under a microscope.
