Lisa: Should I remove old ones? Dr Carter: No, keep foundational work. Dave: When's next tutorial? Dr Carter: Thursday at 2. Not Friday.

SECTION 4

Good morning. In 1993, Rauscher and colleagues at the University of California reported that college students who listened to ten minutes of Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major subsequently performed better on spatial reasoning tasks. The effect, which lasted approximately fifteen minutes, was immediately dubbed the "Mozart effect" and triggered widespread media attention.

Record companies exploited the phenomenon, selling millions of copies of albums titled "Mozart for Babies." The state of Georgia even distributed free classical music recordings to every newborn. However, subsequent meta-analyses demonstrated that the effect was not specific to Mozart: any enjoyable, arousing music produced a similar modest boost. The underlying mechanism appears to be increased mood and arousal, which transiently enhances cognitive performance rather than raising baseline intelligence.

Contemporary researchers now agree that while music may facilitate certain spatial-temporal tasks in the short term, claims that it permanently raises IQ are unsupported.
