The bar chart compares energy use across four sectors in a single country in 2000, 2010 and 2020, measured in million tonnes of oil equivalent.
Overall, total energy consumption grew over the period, driven largely by a sharp increase in the transport sector. Industry remained the largest consumer in 2000 but was overtaken by transport by 2020.
In 2000, industry accounted for the highest energy use at 120 million tonnes, followed by transport at 80, residential at 60 and commercial at just 40.
By 2010, industrial consumption had risen to 140, while transport had climbed to 110. Residential and commercial use also grew modestly, to 70 and 50 respectively.
The most striking change came in the final decade. Transport energy consumption surged to 150, making it the largest-consuming sector. In contrast, industrial use fell back to 110. Residential demand continued to edge up to 75, and commercial use reached 60.
In conclusion, transport overtook industry as the biggest energy consumer, while the commercial and residential sectors saw gradual growth.
