The bar chart compares the average weekly working hours across five professions in a single country in 2024.

Overall, doctors worked by far the longest hours, while shop assistants worked the shortest. Three occupations — teaching, engineering and administration — clustered around 40 hours per week.

Doctors averaged 55 hours per week, considerably more than any other profession shown. This was roughly 13 hours more than teachers, who worked an average of 42 hours. Engineers and office administrators worked similar hours, at 40 and 38 hours respectively.

At the other end of the scale, shop assistants had the shortest working week, at just 32 hours — more than 20 hours fewer than doctors. It is also worth noting that the three middle professions were relatively close to each other, differing by no more than four hours.

In summary, the data reveals a significant gap between high-pressure professional roles, particularly medicine, and service-sector jobs such as retail.
