The use of animals in medical research has long divided opinion. While animal welfare concerns are deeply legitimate, I believe that a complete ban on animal testing would slow vital medical progress. The priority should be stricter regulation and the development of alternatives, rather than prohibition.
Opponents of animal testing argue that it is cruel and morally indefensible. Animals can experience pain and fear, and subjecting them to invasive experiments treats sentient beings as mere tools. There are also scientific reasons for caution: results from animal studies often do not translate to humans, meaning that animals may suffer for little practical benefit. Campaigners point to the development of in-vitro testing, computer modelling and organ-on-chip technology as viable alternatives that could replace animal research entirely.
However, many of the most important medical advances of the last century depended on animal research. Vaccines for polio, insulin for diabetes, and treatments for cancer were all developed using animal models. The complexity of living organisms cannot yet be fully replicated in a dish or on a chip. Banning animal research overnight would halt trials for new drugs and delay treatments for conditions that currently have no cure.
In my view, the solution is neither free rein nor prohibition. Governments should enforce the "three Rs" principle — Replacement, Reduction and Refinement — requiring researchers to use non-animal methods wherever possible, minimise the number of animals used, and improve their welfare.
