Museums are among the most important custodians of a nation's cultural heritage, but whether they should charge admission is a subject of ongoing debate. While charging entry fees provides essential revenue, I believe that free admission yields broader public benefits that outweigh the financial cost.

Those who support charging tickets argue that museums are expensive to run. They must maintain collections, pay curators, provide security and manage exhibitions. Admission fees contribute directly to these costs and reduce reliance on uncertain government funding. Without ticket revenue, some smaller museums might simply close. Furthermore, paid entry can actually enhance the visitor experience by limiting overcrowding and allowing museums to invest in interactive displays that improve educational value.

On the other hand, museums that charge admission risk excluding the very people they exist to serve. Children from low-income families, students and elderly people on fixed incomes may never visit a museum if doing so costs money. This perpetuates inequality in access to culture. Countries such as the United Kingdom have demonstrated that free admission to national museums dramatically increases visitor numbers, particularly among young people, and ultimately leads to a more culturally engaged population.

In my view, the solution is not binary. National and major museums should be free, funded by government, because their mission is public education. Smaller, specialised museums can charge modest fees to support their specific collections.
