The global shift to online learning during the pandemic transformed education delivery. While virtual learning offers unmatched flexibility and access, it also presents significant drawbacks compared with the traditional classroom.

The primary advantage of online study is flexibility. Students can learn from anywhere, at their own pace, and often at lower cost. Those who work full-time, care for family members, or live in remote areas can access courses that would otherwise be unavailable. During the pandemic, universities moved entire degrees online, proving that education could continue despite lockdowns. Recorded lectures also allow students to revisit complex material at their own speed.

However, online learning lacks the social and interactive richness of the classroom. Face-to-face discussion, group work and immediate feedback from teachers are hard to replicate on a screen. Many students, especially younger ones, struggle with self-discipline without the structure and accountability of physical attendance. Research consistently shows that online courses have significantly higher dropout rates than in-person equivalents. There is also a digital divide: students without reliable internet or a quiet study environment are disadvantaged.

In my view, the best model is hybrid. The classroom remains irreplaceable for discussion, mentorship and hands-on learning, but online delivery can handle lectures, administrative flexibility and access to resources. Pure online education suits motivated, self-disciplined adult learners; it is a poor substitute for the social environment that younger students need.
