范文(约 310 词)
In today's competitive economy, working long hours and suffering from stress have become commonplace. This essay explores the reasons behind this trend and outlines what employers and governments can do to alleviate it.
The root cause of rising work stress is primarily economic insecurity and intensifying competition. In a globalised economy, companies face constant pressure to cut costs and increase productivity, which often translates into heavier workloads for individual employees. Workers themselves, fearing redundancy or being left behind, feel compelled to work overtime even when it is not officially required. The blurring boundary between work and home, thanks to smartphones and remote email, means that many employees never truly switch off.
Employers have a central role to play. They can establish clear boundaries, such as prohibiting after-hours emails, and encourage staff to take their full annual leave. Companies like Volkswagen in Germany, which stops email servers outside working hours, demonstrate that such policies are practical. Employers should also invest in mental health support — counselling services, flexible hours and wellness programmes — rather than treating overwork as a badge of honour.
Governments, meanwhile, can legislate to protect workers. Countries such as France have introduced the "right to disconnect", giving employees the legal right to ignore work messages outside working hours. Governments can also enforce limits on maximum working weeks and encourage companies to share the economic benefits of productivity gains with employees through shorter hours or higher wages.
In conclusion, work-related stress stems from competitive pressure and technological over-connection, but both employers and governments have effective tools at their disposal to address it.
