The time I was most surprised was on my thirtieth birthday, about three years ago. I'd honestly forgotten all about it — I'd been swamped at work and had a massive deadline that week. I just assumed it would be another normal Tuesday.

I got home around eight, expecting a quiet dinner like any other night. I walked in, turned on the light, and about ten people jumped out from the living room yelling Surprise! My wife had secretly organised a surprise party, and she'd even invited Leo, who'd driven over an hour to be there.

I was completely shell-shocked. I literally just stood in the doorway for a few seconds, not knowing what to say. Then I started laughing, and of course everyone else laughed too. She'd even baked a cake — which, to be fair, looked a bit wonky, but it was delicious.

The whole evening was a blur of food, beer, and people I hadn't seen in ages. What really got me, though, was the effort my wife had put in. She'd kept it a secret for weeks, and even fed me fake answers every time I asked what was happening that day. I went to bed feeling incredibly loved. It's easily the best birthday I've ever had.
