The gift that really stands out for me is a handwritten recipe book my grandmother gave me when I moved out of my parents' place for the first time. It's not anything fancy — just a plain A5 notebook with a worn cover, filled in her messy but careful handwriting.

She gave it to me on the day I left home, about five years ago. I was packing my stuff into the car, feeling pretty emotional, and she just slipped this little notebook into my bag without making a big deal out of it. I didn't really think much of it until I got to my new flat and opened it.

Inside, there were maybe forty or fifty recipes — her famous braised pork, her dumpling filling, even the simple noodle soup she used to make me when I was sick as a kid. Each one had a little note in the margin, like add more garlic, you'll like it, or this one takes patience. It wasn't just a list of ingredients; it was her life, written down.

I still use that book today. Every time I cook one of those dishes, I feel like she's right there in the kitchen with me. It's easily the most precious thing I own, not because of what it's worth, but because it's irreplaceable.
