After three months of grinding Listening Section 3, something went wrong with my ears.
My girlfriend slammed her bowl down. "Are you even listening to me?"
I instinctively reached for my pen. Section 3 — an academic discussion. Two students debating a project. I needed to take notes on the fly and predict where the key information would land.
Keyword scan: "actually," "listening," "talking." The intensifier usually precedes the answer. I started predicting — what was she building toward? A complaint about me being inattentive? An accusation about where I was last night?
"I've told you a hundred times," her voice climbed an octave, "you left your socks on the sofa again!"

I stood up, walked to the door, and turned back with one final question. "Excuse me — what's the deadline for this assignment?"
She froze. "What assignment?"
"The cool-down you assigned," I said. "Section 3 always asks for the deadline in the last question. I need a precise time."
She switched off the light. The door slammed shut.
I sat in the hallway, opened my phone, and queued up the next listening test. Two students were debating a topic on urban planning.
Suddenly, their tone sounded exactly like my girlfriend's.
