That said, I think the reality is far more complex. In countries where higher education is completely free, such as in Germany or the Nordic nations, the quality of universities is generally very high and social inequality is relatively low. However, this comes at a cost — taxpayers end up funding the system, and in some cases, students may not take their studies seriously when there's no financial pressure. I think the ideal approach would be a mixed model: free primary and secondary education for all, heavily subsidised tertiary education, and generous student loan schemes for those who still struggle. The key is that access should never be determined purely by wealth.


Q2: How has technology changed the way people learn in recent years?

Technology has fundamentally transformed education in ways that previous generations could never have imagined. Perhaps the most obvious change is the accessibility of information — students no longer need to spend hours in a library when they can search for academic papers online in seconds. Beyond that, platforms like Coursera and Khan Academy have democratised learning, allowing people from developing countries to access courses from top universities for a fraction of the cost. That said, there's a downside: the sheer volume of information can be overwhelming, and not everyone knows how to evaluate the credibility of online sources. Also, the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT has raised serious concerns about academic integrity — students can now generate essays in seconds, which forces institutions to rethink how they assess learning altogether.


Q3: Do you think teachers will eventually be replaced by artificial intelligence?

I don't believe AI will replace teachers entirely, though it will undoubtedly reshape the profession. The reason is that education isn't just about transmitting information — it's about mentorship, emotional support, and social interaction, all of which require human qualities. A good teacher can read a student's body language, detect when someone is struggling, and adjust their approach accordingly. AI simply cannot replicate that level of empathy and intuition. What AI will do, however, is take over the more routine tasks — grading multiple-choice tests, creating personalised practice exercises, and providing instant feedback. So rather than replacing teachers, AI will likely free them up to focus on what they do best: inspiring and guiding students. The teachers who thrive in the future will be those who learn to use AI as a tool, not those who resist it.


Q4: Is it better to educate children at home or send them to school?

This is a controversial topic, and I think the answer depends heavily on the individual family and the child's personality. Homeschooling offers clear advantages — children can learn at their own pace, the curriculum can be tailored to their specific interests, and they're protected from negative social influences like bullying. Parents who homeschool often report stronger family bonds and more confident children. On the other hand, traditional schools provide something that homeschooling struggles to replicate: a structured social environment where children learn to interact with diverse peers, navigate conflicts, and develop teamwork skills. For instance, a child who is homeschooled might fall behind in social development if they don't participate in enough extracurricular activities. Ultimately, I believe school is the better default option, but homeschooling can work well when done properly, especially for children with special needs or those in areas with poor school quality.


Q5: Should universities focus more on practical skills or academic knowledge?

I think this is a false dichotomy — universities need both, and the balance should depend on the field of study. In disciplines like engineering, medicine, or computer science, practical skills are obviously essential. Graduates need to be job-ready, and universities that neglect employability do their students a disservice, especially when tuition fees are so high. However, subjects like philosophy, history, and literature aren't meant to be vocational — they teach critical thinking, communication, and analytical reasoning, which are valuable in any career. The real problem is when universities force all departments to justify their existence in purely economic terms. A society that only values what's directly profitable becomes narrow and short-sighted. So I'd say: professional programmes should emphasise practical training, while arts and humanities programmes should be protected for their intrinsic value, even if they don't lead directly to a specific job.


Q6: What role should parents play in their children's education?

Parents are arguably the most important educators, even if they don't realise it. Before children ever step into a classroom, they've already learned their native language, absorbed their parents' values, and developed their attitudes towards learning — all of which shape how they'll perform at school. Research consistently shows that parental involvement, such as reading with children at home or discussing school progress, has a greater impact on academic achievement than school funding or class size. That said, there's a fine line between involvement and over-involvement. Some parents push their children so hard — enrolling them in endless tutoring sessions, restricting their free time — that they actually kill their curiosity and love of learning. The best approach, in my view, is for parents to create a supportive environment at home, set clear expectations, but also give children the space to develop their own interests and learn from their mistakes.
