Q1: Who should be responsible for protecting the environment — governments, companies, or individuals?
In an ideal world, everyone should share that responsibility, but I'd argue that governments and large corporations bear the heaviest burden. The reason is straightforward: individual choices, however virtuous, simply cannot match the scale of environmental damage caused by industrial activity. A single person recycling their plastic bottles is negligible next to the millions of tonnes of waste generated by manufacturing. That said, individual behaviour still matters — not because it solves the problem directly, but because it creates the political pressure that forces governments to act. Consumer demand drives corporate decisions, and public opinion shapes legislation. So it's not an either-or situation. Governments must set the regulatory framework, companies must innovate and comply, and individuals must vote, consume responsibly, and hold both to account.
Q2: Do you think climate change is taken seriously enough by ordinary people?
I think awareness has grown enormously over the last decade, but awareness doesn't always translate into action — what psychologists call the "value-action gap." Many people understand that climate change is real and serious, yet they continue to fly for short holidays, buy fast fashion, and eat meat every day. There are several reasons for this disconnect. For one thing, climate change feels abstract and distant — its worst effects seem to happen to people in other countries or to future generations. For another, people feel powerless. What difference can one person make when China and the US are the largest emitters? This is a legitimate feeling, but it can also become an excuse. I think the real issue is that the people with the most power to change things — politicians and CEOs — are often the ones least motivated to do so, because short-term economic interests override long-term planetary ones.
Q3: Is economic growth compatible with environmental protection?
This is one of the most debated questions in environmental economics, and my view is that it depends entirely on what we mean by "growth." If growth means endlessly increasing the consumption of physical resources — more cars, more buildings, more stuff — then no, it's fundamentally incompatible with a finite planet. We simply cannot continue on a path of material growth indefinitely. However, if growth means increasing GDP through services, digital products, and improved efficiency, then there's no contradiction. The challenge is decoupling growth from resource use. Some countries, like Sweden, have already managed to increase their GDP while reducing carbon emissions over the last two decades. That said, decoupling hasn't happened fast enough to prevent catastrophic warming. The real question is whether we can make the transition quickly enough — and that requires a fundamental shift in how we measure progress, moving beyond GDP to include environmental and social metrics.
Q4: Should developing countries be allowed to pollute their way to prosperity, as developed nations did?
This is a deeply unfair question, and I think the answer has to be no — but with important caveats. It's true that today's wealthy nations industrialised by burning coal and polluting freely, and it's morally dubious to deny developing countries the same path. However, the global environment doesn't care where the emissions come from — a tonne of CO₂ warms the planet regardless of which country releases it. If every developing country followed the fossil-fuel path that the West took, the ecological consequences would be catastrophic. The solution isn't to force poor nations to stay poor, but to provide them with clean technology — solar, wind, battery storage — at affordable prices. Developed nations owe a debt here, both historically and morally. They created the problem, so they should help solve it by transferring green technology, not by simply lecturing developing countries about conservation.
Q5: How can governments encourage people to live more environmentally friendly lives?
I believe the most effective approach is not to rely on moral persuasion, but to change the incentives — make the green option the easy and cheap option. Behavioural research consistently shows that people don't make decisions purely based on ethics; they respond to what's convenient and affordable. So instead of asking people to recycle more, governments should make recycling bins easily accessible and impose penalties for not using them. Instead of telling people to drive less, they should invest in excellent public transport and make driving expensive through congestion charges. Carbon pricing is another powerful tool — when polluting costs more, people naturally pollute less. That said, there's a fairness issue. Environmental policies can disproportionately burden low-income households, who spend a larger share of their income on energy and transport. Any green transition must be accompanied by social policies — rebates, subsidies for home insulation, free public transport for the poor — so that the burden doesn't fall on those least able to pay.
Q6: What role can technology play in solving environmental problems?
Technology is essential, but it's not a silver bullet — and relying on it alone is actually dangerous. On the positive side, renewable energy costs have plummeted over the last decade; solar and wind are now cheaper than coal in most parts of the world. Battery technology is improving, electric vehicles are becoming mainstream, and carbon capture is slowly becoming viable. These are genuinely promising developments. However, technology alone won't solve the problem because the problem isn't just technical — it's behavioural, economic, and political. Even if we had perfect green technology tomorrow, would we deploy it fast enough? Would powerful oil companies allow it? Would consumers give up their lifestyles? History suggests that technical solutions often create new problems — for instance, electric cars reduce tailpipe emissions but require enormous amounts of lithium and rare earth metals. So I think technology is part of the solution, but only alongside changes in consumption patterns, economic systems, and political will.
