NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS

English Version

A friend's birthday party. Eight people showed up. I stood in the corner sipping cola and made a decision: tonight, no talking. Just observing.

Because I'd just finished my thirtieth set of IELTS reading matching exercises.

I knew the rules better than my own name: read the questions first, underline keywords; go back to the text, find the names; around each name there are three sentences, one is the answer; the extra options are distractors — they look right, but they've rephrased it.

Eight people in the living room. Eight options. Perfect.

Xiao Zhang said, "I really can't make sense of house prices lately." I underlined in my head: house prices, can't make sense.

Sister Li said, "My cat has put on three jin recently." Underlined: cat, put on weight.

Old Wang said, "If this project tanks, I've worked six months for nothing." Underlined: project, tanks, six months.

Xiao Zhao said, "I'm quitting my job to open a B&B in Yunnan." Underlined: quit, Yunnan, B&B.

Half an hour later, they played truth or dare, and everyone had to state a recent opinion.

When it was Xiao Zhang's turn, he said, "I think young people should take more risks."

I immediately raised my hand. "That's wrong."

The room went quiet.

Xiao Zhang looked at me. "What's wrong?"

"You just said 'I can't make sense of house prices,'" I said seriously. "The question asks 'who believes young people should take risks.' You've never expressed that view. You're a distractor."

Xiao Zhang froze.

I turned to Sister Li. "You said your cat gained three jin. So the opinion 'supports remote work' isn't you. You mentioned you're annoyed about coming in three days a week — that's 'unhappiness with commuting,' not a synonym for 'supports remote work.' That kind of paraphrase doesn't hold up in IELTS."

Sister Li's fork hung in mid-air.

Old Wang raised his hand tentatively. "So… 'risk and reward are two sides of the same coin' — is that me?"

I shook my head. "You said 'if the project tanks, six months gone.' That's loss aversion, not 'risk and reward are two sides of the same coin.' You're oversimplifying the question."

Xiao Zhao smirked. "Quitting my job to run a B&B in Yunnan — surely that matches 'pursuing a lifestyle'?"

"It matches," I said, "but 'pursuing a lifestyle' isn't in the answer key. The options are only A to H. You've been dumped in an unused paragraph — the kind even NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS can't save."

Xiao Zhao slammed his glass down. "Are you out of your mind?"

My eyes lit up.

"Now we're talking," I said. "Keywords: out of my mind. The original text — which is me — just said 'something's not right lately.' That's a synonym match, confirmed. The question asks 'who thinks I have a problem.' Answer: Xiao Zhao. Option H."

The party ended quite quickly. My friend walked me to the door and whispered, "Don't bring IELTS here again."

I nodded, and mentally matched him to the category "believes friends should stay away from exams."

He was right. But I can't stop.

— After three hundred matching questions, every person is a prompt, every sentence an option waiting to be matched, and even "hello" first has to be judged as either a synonym for "hi" or a synonym for "get lost."
