雅思搞笑故事 35：三分钟读完麦片盒背面，还顺手做了Heading Matching
为了练阅读速度，我把所有英文材料都当成雅思阅读来做。
地铁上的广告、超市的说明牌、药品说明书，扫一眼就划完。老师说我"skimming and scanning"已经练到出神入化。
直到那天早上，我倒麦片。
拿起盒子，背面有一大段英文：产地、配料、营养成分、保质期。正常人扫一眼就完了。
但我已经不正常了。
我把麦片盒翻过来，平放在桌上，开始做题。
第一题，List of Headings。背面有四段：
A 段讲"精选澳大利亚优质小麦"。匹配哪个标题？"Sourcing of raw materials"。
B 段讲"每 100 克含 380 千卡"。匹配标题："Nutritional information per serving"。
C 段讲"开封后请三周内食用完毕"。匹配："Storage advice after opening"。
D 段讲"本产品含有麸质，过敏者请勿食用"。匹配："Allergy warning"。
三分钟，全部做完。我甚至在旁边用铅笔标了 paragraph numbers。
老婆进厨房倒水，看见我对着麦片盒埋头苦读，桌上还摊着一张画满线的草稿纸。
"你干嘛呢？"
"做 Heading Matching，"我说，"背面四段，四个标题，全对。"
老婆拿过盒子看了一眼。"这就是个麦片盒。"
"段落结构非常清楚，"我意犹未尽，"A 段是 general→specific，先讲产地再讲工艺，典型的说明文结构。"
"那你吃不吃？"
"等一下，"我突然皱眉，"这里有个陷阱。D 段说'含有麸质'，但 B 段的营养表里没列麸质。这是不是 NOT GIVEN？不对，配料表里有小麦，小麦就是麸质来源。应该是 TRUE。"
老婆已经把我的碗端走了。
"你再对着麦片盒研究下去，"她说，"等会儿连微波炉上的提示语你都要判断 TRUE/FALSE。"
她又说对了。
十分钟后，我站在微波炉前，盯着面板上的英文："Do not operate while empty."
我在脑子里翻译：空炉时请勿运行。
然后我开始想：如果题目问"Is it dangerous to run the microwave with nothing inside?"——这是 TRUE 还是 NOT GIVEN？原文只说"请勿"，没说"危险"。
NOT GIVEN。
我站在厨房里，对着一台微波炉，做了一道雅思阅读判断题。
而麦片，早就凉了。
——雅思阅读速度练到最高境界：你读得最快的，不是真题，是麦片盒背面。代价是，你再也没法把一段普通的英文，只当成一段普通的英文。
English Version
To speed up my reading, I treated every piece of English like an IELTS passage.
Subway ads, supermarket signs, medicine labels — I skimmed them and moved on. My teacher said my skimming and scanning had reached a whole new level.
Until one morning, when I was pouring cereal.
I picked up the box. On the back was a chunk of English: origin, ingredients, nutrition, best-before date. A normal person glances and moves on.
But I was no longer normal.
I flipped the box over, laid it flat on the table, and started doing questions.
Question one: List of Headings. The back had four paragraphs:
Paragraph A talked about "premium wheat sourced from Australia." Which heading matched? "Sourcing of raw materials."
Paragraph B said "380 kcal per 100 g." Heading: "Nutritional information per serving."
Paragraph C said "consume within three weeks of opening." Heading: "Storage advice after opening."
Paragraph D said "this product contains gluten; allergy sufferers, please do not consume." Heading: "Allergy warning."
Three minutes, all done. I even marked the paragraph numbers in pencil on the side.
My wife walked in to get water, saw me hunched over a cereal box with a sheet of scribbled diagrams next to me.
"What are you doing?"
"Doing Heading Matching," I said. "Four paragraphs on the back, four headings. All correct."
She picked up the box. "It's a cereal box."
"The paragraph structure is really clear," I said, not done. "Paragraph A goes general to specific — origin first, then production technique. Classic expository structure."
"So are you going to eat or not?"
"Hold on," I frowned. "There's a trap here. Paragraph D says 'contains gluten,' but the nutrition table in B doesn't list gluten. Is that NOT GIVEN? No — the ingredients list has wheat, and wheat is a gluten source. It should be TRUE."
My wife had already taken my bowl away.
"Keep analysing the cereal box," she said, "and next you'll be judging TRUE/FALSE on the labels inside the microwave."
She was right again.
Ten minutes later I was standing in front of the microwave, staring at the English on the panel: "Do not operate while empty."
I translated in my head: 空炉时请勿运行.
Then I started thinking: if a question asked, "Is it dangerous to run the microwave with nothing inside?" — would that be TRUE or NOT GIVEN? The text only says "do not," it never says "dangerous."
NOT GIVEN.
I stood in the kitchen, facing a microwave, working through an IELTS True/False/Not Given question.
And the cereal had gone cold.
— The highest level of IELTS reading speed: the fastest thing you can read isn't a real passage — it's the back of a cereal box. The price is that you can never again read a normal piece of English as just a normal piece of English.
