The quiet place I want to describe is a small park near the river, about twenty minutes' walk from where I live. It's not famous — most locals walk past it without noticing — but it's become my refuge.

I stumbled on it by accident about a year ago. I'd taken a wrong turn on my way home and found myself on this footpath that runs along the water. There's a wooden bench under an old willow tree, and from there you can see the river bend and the city skyline in the distance.

What I love about it is how it disappears from the rest of the world. Even though you're still in the middle of the city, the sound of the water and the trees drowns out the traffic. I go there when I need to clear my head — after a stressful day, or when I'm stuck on a problem. Sometimes I just sit and watch the light change. Other times I'll bring a notebook and write.

I think everyone needs a place like that — somewhere that isn't home, isn't work, isn't a café — where you can be alone without feeling lonely.
