Q1: What is the main purpose of university education?
That's a good question, and I think it's changed over time. Traditionally, university was seen as a place to pursue knowledge for its own sake — to cultivate critical thinking, not just job skills. These days, it's increasingly treated as vocational training: a ticket to a better job. There's pressure on universities to demonstrate employability outcomes, which I think has narrowed what students actually study. Ideally, you'd want both — intellectual development and practical preparation — but the balance has shifted towards the latter.
Q2: Should university education be free for everyone?
In principle, yes — but in practice it's more complicated. Free higher education makes sense from an equity standpoint: you don't want talent wasted because someone can't afford tuition. But someone has to pay, and if it's the state, that means either higher taxes or fewer places. Countries that have gone fully free often end up with extremely competitive entrance exams or underfunded universities. I think a mixed system — means-tested tuition with generous scholarships — is probably the most realistic middle ground.
Q3: How has technology changed the way students learn?
Enormously, and not all for the better. The obvious benefit is access — a student anywhere can watch a lecture from a top university online. But I think technology has also made learning more fragmented. Students now expect information in short, bite-sized pieces, which makes sustained deep reading harder. There's also the question of academic integrity — when AI can write an essay, what does assessment even mean? It's forcing educators to rethink what they're actually testing.
Q4: Do you think rote learning still has a place?
It's unfashionable to say so, but yes, up to a point. You can't think critically about grammar if you don't internalise basic structures. You can't reason mathematically without knowing your multiplication tables. Rote learning becomes a problem when it replaces understanding entirely — when students memorise without grasping. But as a foundation, it's unavoidable. The trick is moving from memorisation to application quickly enough.
