Q1: What does IT governance look like in a large bank?

It's a formalised, multi-layered structure. At the top there's an IT strategy committee that aligns technology investments with business goals. Then there are architecture boards that review system design decisions to prevent the bank from accumulating even more technical debt. Below that, change advisory boards approve production releases, and risk and compliance teams audit everything. The challenge is keeping all these layers from slowing everything to a crawl. The best banks treat governance as an enabler — clear guardrails that let teams move fast within them — rather than a bureaucratic hurdle.

Q2: How do you manage technical debt in banking?

You have to be deliberate about it, because it never goes away on its own. Technical debt accumulates because every urgent project cuts corners to meet a deadline. In a startup, you might rewrite the whole system; in a bank, you can't. The pragmatic approach is allocating a percentage of every sprint — say, twenty percent — to refactoring and modernisation. You also need a clear inventory: which systems are critical, which are sunsetting, which need investment. Surprising how many banks don't have that map.

Q3: What role does cybersecurity play in information systems management?

It's not a separate concern — it's woven through everything. Banks are high-value targets, and the threat landscape keeps evolving. Modern security isn't just firewalls and antivirus; it's identity and access management, encryption, threat detection, and incident response planning. There's also the human element: phishing awareness training, because the weakest link is almost always a person clicking a malicious link. Every time you introduce a new system, you're introducing a new potential attack surface, so security has to be involved from day one.

Q4: How do you align IT priorities with business priorities?

This is where a lot of banks struggle. The business wants new customer features now; IT wants stability, security, and technical modernisation. The way to bridge that is a shared roadmap — business and IT leadership sitting in the same room, agreeing on what matters for the next quarter, and treating IT not as a cost centre but as a strategic partner. The worst situation is IT as an order-taker: business comes with a request, IT scopes it, everyone resents the timeline. The best is when IT and product leaders problem-solve together.
