Mount Everest

珠穆朗玛峰 · 世界之巅

Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth, rising 8,848 metres above sea level on the border of Nepal and the Tibet region of China. Known in Tibetan as Chomolungma ('Goddess Mother of the World') and in Nepali as Sagarmatha, it is the crown of the Himalaya and the ultimate goal of mountaineers.

Location and the Himalaya
Everest is part of the Great Himalaya range, the highest mountain chain on Earth. It formed over roughly 50 million years as the Indian plate collided with Eurasia, folding the seafloor upward into the world's tallest peaks.
珠峰属于喜马拉雅山脉,由印度板块与欧亚板块碰撞挤压而成。
The First Ascent
On 29 May 1953, Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal, became the first people to reach the summit. The route they took, the South Col, remains the most popular today.
1953年5月29日,希拉里与夏尔巴人丹增·诺盖首次登顶珠峰,走的是南坳路线。
The Death Zone
Above about 8,000 metres, oxygen is so thin that the body begins to die, a region climbers call the death zone. Summits there are made in a narrow weather window, and thousands of people have now stood on top — at the cost of more than 300 lives.
海拔8000米以上被称为死亡地带,氧气稀薄,人体机能开始衰竭。至今已有数千人登顶,也有300多人遇难。
Formation and Growth
The same collision that built Everest is still pushing it upward about four millimetres every year. The rock at the summit is ancient marine limestone, proof that the top of the world once lay beneath the sea.
