A River Wider Than Any Other

Near its mouth, the Amazon is more than 300 km wide during the wet season, and it discharges so much water that its freshwater plume spreads far into the Atlantic. No bridge crosses the main channel.

The Rainforest

The Amazon rainforest covers about 5.5 million km² across Brazil, Peru, Colombia and six other countries. It is home to an estimated 10% of all known species and is often called the lungs of the planet, though scientists caution it produces about as much oxygen as it consumes.

The River of Many Names

The Amazon begins as the Apurímac high in the Andes and only takes the name Amazon after the confluence of the Marañón and Ucayali. Spanish explorers once thought they saw warrior women, and named it after the Amazons of Greek myth.

Biodiversity and Threats

The basin holds more species of fish than any other river system. But deforestation, mining and drought are damaging the ecosystem, and the 'flying rivers' of moisture that the forest recycles into the sky are now under pressure.
