Nvidia Acquires Hugging Face for $12.93B in Its Biggest Deal Ever, Expanding Its AI Stack

What happened

On September 3, Nvidia announced a $12.93 billion acquisition of Hugging Face — the company's largest acquisition ever — giving the AI-chip giant control of one of the most important distribution and collaboration platforms in AI.

Platform scale

  • Hosts 3M+ AI models, ~500K datasets, and 1M+ applications
  • Community of 18M+ users and 200K companies

Key statement

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said Hugging Face will continue operating as an open platform, and developers will not be required to use Nvidia hardware.

Why it matters

Nvidia already dominates the accelerators that train and run large models. Owning Hugging Face gives it a direct position in the developer ecosystem where models are discovered, shared, fine-tuned, evaluated and deployed — extending its reach into the software layer above the chips.

Two things to watch:

  1. Regulatory scrutiny: Nvidia would own both critical AI compute infrastructure and one of the industry's most important model marketplaces
  2. Hardware neutrality: with hyperscalers increasingly building custom chips, whether Hugging Face stays genuinely hardware-neutral will be critical
