雅思搞笑故事 13：我成了一个忍不住接话茬的人
事情是从什么时候开始的，我记不清了。
只记得那天下班，同事小张站在电梯口说："今天这雨下得也太——"
我脱口而出："——大了。"
小张愣了一下。"我本来想说'夸张'。"
"不对，"我说，"你前面说'下得也太'，后面接的必须是两个音节以内的形容词。'夸张'是两个字，但它是状态描述，不是程度副词。语法上不通。'大'才是正确答案。NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS。"
小张看了我三秒，走出了电梯。
我没当回事。
直到我妈打电话来。"儿子啊，你今天吃饭了没？我跟你说，我昨天去菜市场——"
"——菜价又涨了。"我接道。
电话那头沉默了两秒。"我本来想说'碰到你王阿姨了'。"
"不可能，"我说，"题干是'我昨天去菜市场'，定位词是'菜市场'。后面接的句子必须是和菜市场场景相关的延续。'碰到王阿姨'是人，不是物，不符合填空规则。'菜价涨了'才是原文逻辑链上的下一步。"
我妈说："你是不是又在背雅思？"
"NOT GIVEN。"
第二天开会，老板在白板前讲："我们这个季度的核心目标，是把用户留存率——"
我举手："——提升三个百分点。"
老板转过头，微笑。"我本来想说'做到行业第一'。"
"做不到，"我说，"原文（也就是上季度财报）说的是'提升两个百分点'。你说'行业第一'是主观愿望，不是原文填空。而且'三个百分点'比'两个百分点'只多一个词，符合 NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS。"
会议室里安静了五秒。
老板把马克笔放下。"你最近是不是做了太多sentence completion？"
我眼眶一热。终于有人看出来了。
"是的，"我说，"我做了八百道。现在只要有人开口说半句话，我的大脑就自动开始定位——空前是什么词，空后是什么词，中间缺的那个名词单复数对不对，有没有同义词替换，字数超没超。我控制不住。"
老板点点头。"那你现在帮我填一个空。"
"您说。"
"你的工位，从明天起，搬到——"
我屏住呼吸。空前：工位，从明天起，搬到。空后：句号。词性：地点名词。字数：NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS。
"——家里。"我平静地说。
老板愣了一下。"我本来想说'楼梯间'。"
"不对，"我说，"题干说的是'从明天起'，这是一个长期状态，不是临时安排。'楼梯间'是临时的。'家里'才是远程办公，和上一个季度'半远程'的原文一致。同义替换成立。"
老板鼓起掌来。"满分。你可以回家答题了。"
我走出公司大门，雨果然下得很大。
我在心里给自己填了一个空：从今天起，我的工作地点变成了——
——家里。
——做了八百道sentence completion之后，我接的不是话茬，是原文；我填的不是句子，是命运。每一个没说完的"也太"，都在等我补上那个正确答案。

I can't remember exactly when it started.
I only remember: that evening after work, my colleague Xiao Zhang was standing by the elevator and said, "The rain today is just too—"
I blurted out: "—heavy."
Xiao Zhang blinked. "I was going to say 'extreme.'"
"No," I said. "You said 'is just too.' What follows has to be an adjective of no more than two syllables. 'Extreme' is two characters, but it's a state description, not a degree adverb. Grammatically it doesn't work. 'Heavy' is the correct answer. NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS."
Xiao Zhang looked at me for three seconds and walked out of the elevator.
I didn't think much of it.
Then my mom called. "Son, have you eaten today? Let me tell you, yesterday I went to the wet market—"
"—and vegetable prices went up again," I finished for her.
Two seconds of silence. "I was going to say 'I ran into your Auntie Wang.'"
"Impossible," I said. "The stem is 'yesterday I went to the wet market.' The keyword is 'wet market.' What comes after has to be a continuation related to the wet market scene. 'Ran into Auntie Wang' is a person, not an object — it doesn't fit the blank rules. 'Vegetable prices went up' is the next step in the original logical chain."
My mom said, "Are you doing IELTS again?"
"NOT GIVEN."
The next day in a meeting, my boss stood at the whiteboard and said, "Our core goal this quarter is to make user retention—"
I raised my hand. "—go up by three percentage points."
My boss turned around, smiling. "I was going to say 'be number one in the industry.'"
"Not possible," I said. "The original text — which is last quarter's earnings report — says 'up by two percentage points.' 'Number one in the industry' is a subjective wish, not a fill-in from the text. And 'three percentage points' is only one word more than 'two percentage points,' so it fits NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS."
Five seconds of silence in the room.
My boss put down the marker. "Have you been doing too many sentence completion exercises lately?"
I felt my eyes well up. Someone finally saw it.
"Yes," I said. "Eight hundred of them. Now whenever someone says half a sentence, my brain starts locating automatically — what's before the blank, what's after it, whether the missing noun is singular or plural, whether there's a synonym swap, whether I'm over the word count. I can't stop."
My boss nodded. "Then help me fill in a blank."
"Go ahead."
"Your desk, starting tomorrow, moves to—"
I held my breath. Before the blank: desk, starting tomorrow, moves to. After the blank: period. Part of speech: place noun. Word count: NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS.
"—home," I said calmly.
My boss paused. "I was going to say 'the stairwell.'"
"Wrong," I said. "The stem says 'starting tomorrow,' which is a long-term state, not a temporary arrangement. 'Stairwell' is temporary. 'Home' is remote work, consistent with last quarter's 'half-remote' original text. The synonym swap holds."
My boss applauded. "Full marks. You can go home and fill in blanks now."
I walked out of the office. The rain was indeed heavy.
I mentally filled in one more blank for myself: from today, my workplace becomes—
—home.
— After eight hundred sentence completion exercises, what I'm finishing isn't someone's sentence — it's the original text. What I'm filling in isn't a blank — it's my destiny. Every unfinished "just too" is waiting for me to supply the right answer.
